Feeling ourselves on the edge of a third world war, we also feel the need to hear Rumi’s “Peace message” after eight centuries he delivered it. We seek to understand his poems which are still very young and inspiring.

The world is getting more global yet, peace and dialogue is lacking more and more. Therefore, we need the universal voice of Rumi more than ever. The humanity seems to have not learned its lessons from the two world wars. Feeling ourselves on the edge of a third one, we also feel the need to hear Rumi’s “Peace message” after eight centuries he delivered it. We seek to understand his poems which are still very young and inspiring*.

Come; join us to understand him, which will hopefully lead to understanding of each other, and make this world a better place.

Come, hear the word of Rumi coming from 8 centuries away :

Come, come whoever you are..

Wonderer, worshipper, lover of leaving.

It doesn’t matter.

Ours is not a caravan of despair.

Come, even if you have broken your vow a thousand times

The making of Noah’s Pudding is a common practice among Muslims and Christians in the Middle East. It is the symbol of sharing joy – the joy of Noah’s landing, the joy of Moses’ crossing the Red Sea, the joy of Jesus’ birth and God’s bestowments to many other Prophets.

According to the tradition, when the waters of the Great Flood began to recede, Prophet Noah and his family are said to have gathered up all of the food remaining on the ark and cooked a delicious pudding out of it. Noah’s pudding is the name given to this dish. In the remembrance of Prophet Noah and as thanksgiving to God, Dialogue International volunteers made it custom to maintain the tradition by preparing this pudding on this day and to share it with neighbors and friends. Generally, people who prepare Ashure send a cup of it to each of their neighbors. As a tradition, forty houses to your east, west, north and south considered neighbors.

Sharing food offers a way to reaffirm unity and the essential relationship of human to one another regardless of faith, race and color. To continue this good tradition and expand the experience of sharing, love, peace and compassion Dialogue International is offering you to be part of this joyful traditional event by sharing the homemade Noah’s pudding with us

The speaker event “Wrestling with FreeSpeech, Religious Freedom, and Democracy in Turkey” is being held at Gale VandeBerg Auditorium, 121 Pyle Center on October 28th, 2011, between 4:30pm-6:00pm

We are honored to have the distinguished speaker, James C. Harrington here at UW-Madison campus to present his discussion, particularly focusing on the political trial of Fethullah Gülen.

The political trial of Fethullah Gülen, a moderate Turkish religious leader, helped to greatly expand civil liberties and strengthen democracy in Turkey. The trial began in 2000 in an Ankara state security court(now disbanded) and ended in 2008 in an appeals court in Gülen’s favor. This book explores Gülen’s trial, examines the evolving process of Turkey’s efforts to enter the European Union, and discusses ways that the EU’s insistence on expanding civil liberties in Turkey and reforming the judicial system affected the outcome of the trial(and vice versa). As a coda, the book considers unsuccessful efforts to block Gülen’s application for immigrant status in the United States as a religious scholar, which occurred during the same time as his political trial in Turkey.

About the author:

James C. Harrington, a human rights attorney with nearly four decades of experience, is founder and director of the Texas Civil Rights Project. He has taught at the University of Texas School of Law for twenty-one years. Harrington has handled landmark civil rights cases, written and published widely, and served on human rights delegations in different areas of the world. Harrington is author of Wrestling with Free Speech, Religious Freedom, and Democracy in Turkey: The Political Trials and Times of Fethullah Gülen, The Texas Bill of Rights: A Commentary and Litigation Manual, myriad law review articles, a wide assortment of op-ed pieces, and various book reviews.
